Wilpattu Safari Camp – 3 Nights, Birds & Big Mammals

Combine your interest in birds with time to search for larger mammals on this three-night stay at Wilpattu Safari Camp. Six guided game drives over four days give you opportunities to explore Wilpattu’s forests and natural water bodies, with time between safaris to relax at camp.

This package is particularly suited to birdwatchers who also hope to encounter Sri Lankan leopards, sloth bears and elephants. Among our Wilpattu Tented Camping Safaris, the three-night stay offers a balance: enough drives to give different wildlife interests their own attention, without extending your visit to a full five days.

Wilpattu Safari Camp sits just outside the national park boundary near the park gate. You stay at the camp and travel into the national park for each guided game drive.

Day 01: Arrive and begin your wildlife exploration

• 12 noon — Meet our crew at the Wilpattu National Park entrance and transfer to Wilpattu Safari Camp, outside the park boundary.
• Lunch at camp before your first safari.
• Afternoon guided game drive. Get to know Wilpattu’s landscapes while watching for spotted deer, sambar and elephants. Your guide will also look for leopards and sloth bears. Painted storks or Asian openbills around the villus may provide your first birdwatching opportunities.
• Dinner and overnight stay at Wilpattu Safari Camp.

Day 02: Birdwatching and a mammal-focused drive

• Early morning guided game drive. Give time to Wilpattu’s birdlife, looking for Sri Lanka junglefowl along the tracks and little cormorants, purple herons and egrets near the water. Your guide will help identify the species encountered.
• Breakfast back at camp, followed by time at leisure.
• Afternoon guided game drive. Focus more closely on searching for leopards, sloth bears and elephants, following your guide’s assessment of wildlife activity and suitable routes.
• Dinner and overnight stay at camp.

Day 03: Explore your interests further

• Early morning guided game drive. Continue birdwatching or give greater attention to mammals, according to your priorities. Another drive offers time to observe familiar species more closely and look for birds or animals you have not yet encountered.
• Breakfast back at camp, followed by time at leisure.
• Afternoon guided game drive. Explore again in the changing afternoon light. Watch for larger mammals and other wildlife, including mugger crocodiles beside the park’s natural water bodies.
• Dinner and overnight stay at camp.

Day 04: Final safari and departure

• Breakfast at camp.
• Morning guided game drive. Use your sixth safari to revisit an area of interest or follow your guide’s advice on current activity. Whether watching junglefowl near the forest edge or looking for a leopard along the tracks, remain open to what the park reveals.
• Return to camp, then transfer to the park gate for checkout.

Every Wilpattu Safari Camp package includes tented accommodation, all meals from lunch on your arrival day through to breakfast on your departure day, tea and coffee, local spirits, beer and wine.
